AFRICAN REFORMATION PARTY SEEKS INEC REGISTRATION

AFRICAN REFORMATION PARTY SEEKS INEC REGISTRATION HAVING MET ALL CONSTITUTIONAL

REQUIREMENTS

...Adams Tanko Reporting Live from Abuja, Nigeria.

The African Reformation Party (ARP) has formally requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register it as a political party in Nigeria.

According to the party's leadership, ARP has met all constitutional requirements for registration.

The ARP submitted its first intent letter to INEC in January 2021, and yet another intent sent on November 14 after the 2023 general elections.

The party's national chairman, Hon. Mutiu Olakunle Okunola, and legal consultant, Emmanuel O. Aliyu Esq., have been spearheading the registration process.

Interestingly, ARP claims to have been the first to submit an official logo with a mace as its symbol.

However, INEC seems to have given preference to the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), a newly formed political association, for the same logo.

ARP alleges that it has been waiting for INEC's response since the COVID-19 sit-at-home period.

ARP asserts that it has fulfilled all necessary conditions for registration as a political party.

The party has a national executive council and state leadership in place, meeting the requirements outlined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022.

The ARP leadership, accompanied by state chairmen and national executive council members, staged a peaceful protest at the INEC headquarters.

They were received by a commissioner who promised to take their request to INEC's leadership.

The registration of new political parties could reshape Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While some analysts see this development as a positive step towards deepening democracy, others express concerns about the potential for increased fragmentation and the challenges of sustaining new parties.

INEC has received numerous applications for party registration, with 171 associations currently in the process. Recently, the commission shortlisted 14 associations that met the initial requirements for registration.

These associations will undergo further verification before being granted full registration.

The ARP leadership is urging INEC to register the party, citing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to electoral laws.

By registering ARP, the party believes it can contribute to Nigeria's democratic growth and provide an alternative voice in the political landscape.
